Details
Mühlebach lies at 1200 metres above sea level. Today, around 80 people live here. In 2004, the formerly independent municipality merged with the neighbouring village of Ernen. Mühlebach is known as the birthplace of Cardinal Matthäus Schiner (around 1470-1522), who was active in the Milan campaigns at the beginning of the 16th century. The settlement, named after the müllinen (mills), was first mentioned in a document in 1215 in connection with the local noble family. In the 16th century, the small village was home to Peter Zlauwinen, Martin Clausen and Matthäus Schiner, the cardinal's nephew, who was governor of the Valais several times. Mühlebach is also known as the home of the Bodmer family of sculptors, with the most important representative being Moritz Bodmer (1618-1711).
