Ski touring and snowshoeing are booming every winter in Switzerland. However, there is a risk of avalanche as soon as you leave the secured areas. Having the right equipment in your bag is not enough to save lives; you must also know how to use it correctly: only with the necessary skills and regular training can victims be rescued in time. The stationary Avalanche Training Centre is the perfect place for avalanche rescue training.
The trainings entail underground transmitters randomly being activated and sending the same signal as a DVA. Simple or complex scenarios are also created and offer the possibility to train with your own equipment. The center laos offers courses and information on avalanches and their management.
Avalanche risk management as a living tradition
Avalanche risk management is an aspect of life in mountain regions. Knowledge of the risk factors to be taken into account in the mountains, such as weather, snow conditions, slope steepness and past avalanches, is passed on to the public, enabling them to assess the dangers and to take the best possible precautions. This knowledge has long been used in land planning, building and infrastructure construction, as well as in social and leisure activities. The transmission of this knowledge is essential since it structures a whole part of daily life in the mountains and allows us to maintain it.
Recognizing its importance, the UNESCO inscribed avalanche risk management on its List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018.
