Nature Festival: The secret world of bugs

Excursion / Guided tour
Next date / period: 23.05.2026 14:00 to 17:00

Naturpark Pfyn-Finges - Daniel Ballmer, ecologist and documentary filmmaker, invites you to immerse yourself in an unknown world that lies right at your feet.

Bugs don't get good press. But only a tiny handful of species are bloodsuckers or agricultural pests. In addition to these, there are over 1,000 native species that perform a wide variety of functions. Among them are beneficial insects that devour aphids and caterpillars and are now also used specifically in greenhouses. Or harmless plant suckers that are an important food source for birds. The hidden realm of bugs also includes swimmers, divers and water striders that rid our ponds of mosquito larvae. Or seed thieves that, like squirrels, ensure that young plants germinate. Hardly any other group of insects is so diverse in its appearance and way of life. And hardly any other is so well suited to enhancing the quality and plant diversity of a habitat.
Daniel Ballmer, ecologist and documentary filmmaker, invites you into a world you have probably never noticed before. Join him as he delves into the microcosm of meadows and forests. Under the magnifying glass, discover charmingly clumsy creatures with cow spots, poison mixers with flamboyant warning colours, and graceful, delicate stilt walkers. Give bugs a chance.

Organised in collaboration with the municipality of Sierre.

The excursion takes place outdoors, even in light rain – weatherproof clothing is necessary. You are welcome to bring a magnifying glass or botanist's loupe and an insect net, but some items are already available.
People who have difficulty walking can easily keep up; the paths are short. Those who cannot stand for long periods of time are asked to bring a camping chair or similar seating. Unfortunately, this event is not particularly suitable for people with poor eyesight. Children and dogs with a strong urge to move around are also likely to get bored on this excursion. Patient dogs on a leash are welcome.
