Laufenburg Old Town

Site
Season: All season

Jurapark Aargau - The town of Laufenburg was divided into two parts by Napoleon: a Swiss side and a German side. On both banks of the Rhine, you can explore picturesque alleyways lined with colourful houses.

Laufenburg consists of two districts: a Swiss side and a German side. Both have small old towns with winding alleyways, colourful houses and a few shops. They are separated by the River Rhine, and the old towns are linked by a bridge. On the Swiss side of the river, the ruins of Laufenburg tower above the old town. It was once the ancestral seat of the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg: so there are also Habsburg stories to be discovered in the streets of Laufenburg.

Getting there: A 5-minute walk from Laufenburg railway station (CH) to the old town.

Hiking tip: The Flösserweg trail starts in Laufenburg and takes 5 hours 45 minutes to reach Villigen. The route can also be shortened to a 3-hour walk to Hottwil. Alternatively, the leisurely ‘Laufenburger Acht’ walk offers a lovely route along the Rhine.

Food & shopping: The Jurapark Maier bakery and numerous other restaurants and shops are available in the town.

Bookable activities: A wide variety of guided tours and experiences can be booked through Laufenburg Tourism.

Prams & accessibility: Partially suitable (cobblestones in the old town).
