Roman Road
Jurapark Aargau - Go for a walk along ancient paths: the old Roman road linking Augusta Raurica and Vindonissa is still accessible today.
The Bözberg is a well-known and important mountain pass in the Jura, linking Basel with Zurich. Even in ancient times, the route between the Rhine and the Aare was of great importance: for the Romans, this was the direct route from Augusta Raurica to the legionary camp at Vindonissa. The pass was therefore also a vital link between the Gallic provinces and the province of Raetia.
It is unclear whether it was actually the Romans who carved the road out of the limestone cliffs. Horseshoes and nails have been found along the route, items which the Romans had not yet developed. Archaeologists remain divided to this day as to when the Roman road first came into existence. What is certain is that the route was in use until the 13th century, after which it was replaced by a new road.
A section of the Roman Road, approximately 3.5 km long, has survived to this day and can be walked between Neustalden (Bözberg pass) and Effingen.
