Town house, built in the 16th century

Regionaler Naturpark Schaffhausen - The house “Zum Hinteren Dornhahn” is located opposite the Allerheiligen monastery, the former center of the town of Schaffhausen. It is a typical medieval town house with a workshop or store on the first floor and apartments above.

The year of construction of the house “Zum Hinteren Dornhahn” cannot be determined exactly. However, the year 1565 on the façade of the “Vorderer Dornhahn” bears witness to construction activity. For two to three hundred years, the upper floors of the house “Zum Hinteren Dornhahn” were used as a residential building. The first floor and cellar were adapted to the respective commercial purpose. The Seiler family, whose members lived in the house from around 1660 to 1780, were involved in book printing, bookbinding and bookselling, which suggests that there was a corresponding workshop on the first floor. In 1762, the “Hintere Dornhahn” was presumably rebuilt and given a new façade with the rooster coat of arms and the year. Most recently, the house was extensively renovated between 2022 and 2023 and the original building fabric was restored or adapted to current regulations.
