Romainmôtier Heritage Trail

Theme trailHiking trail
Time required: 3 hours 40 minutesLength: 13.00 km

Parc naturel régional Jura vaudois - The landscapes of the Nozon valley, shaped by the forces of nature, have retained their wild and unspoilt beauty and their medieval character.

On this walk, you will discover a variety of habitats, some of which are rather unusual. Depending on the season, carpets of snowdrops or wild garlic thrive along the water’s edge. Above the rock faces, clumps of boxwood and stunted oaks appear, lending the landscape a Mediterranean feel.

Over the centuries, humans have left their mark on these wild woodland areas: prehistoric stones bearing peculiar markings, furnaces for iron smelting, lime kilns, and quarries used to extract building stone or to produce the magnificent well basins found in the villages around Lake Geneva.

Along the way, you’ll come across a quarry from which many of the region’s fountain basins were sourced. You’ll also see the remains of iron smelting furnaces and lime kilns, as well as a stone bearing engravings at a place called Gottettes. Once you’re back in Croy, be sure to take a look at the old washing places and fountains.
