Historic circular route
Jurapark Aargau - Discover how vineyards, pastures, and forests were connected along the transport routes of the past.
The circular route follows three historic transport routes around Schinznach-Dorf: the Chalmweg, the hollow paths in the forest between Chalm and Heister, and the Alte Gasse. These three paths formed the basic framework of the management routes in the vineyards, pastures, and forests. On site, three information boards provide details about the history and nature along the routes. Views of Kasteln Castle and the mountains complete the hike.
Chalmweg – vineyards
Vines were already cultivated in the Schenkenbergertal in the Middle Ages and dry stone walls were built. The walls were used to guide livestock so that the animals did not stray into the vineyards on their way to the forest pasture.
Hollow paths – forestry
Forestry also dates back several centuries. The paths leading further uphill were used for forest access. Animals were led along these paths to forest pastures, and felled wood was transported back to the village. These movements created the hollow paths still visible in the forest today.
Alte Gasse – the path to the wine press
This cobblestone-paved road, as in former times, was the main way from the vineyards to the wine press in the village. Historic dry stone walls can also be admired along the Alte Gasse, but here they served as retaining walls.

From 2018 to 2022, 380 m² of walls were restored here at the Chalm and the Alte Gasse in 7,700 working hours. The walls are not only historically significant but, together with structurally rich vineyards and open forests, provide valuable habitat for heat-loving species.
