Albert Schweitzer Trail

Theme trail
Time required: 1 hour 30 minutesLength: 4.81 km

Naturpark Diemtigtal - The circular route around the Grimmialp is dedicated to probably the most famous guest of the Diemtigtal. The stays between 1901 and 1909 strongly influenced Schweitzer's ethic of "Reverence for Life."

The Grimmialp was of crucial importance for the life and work of Albert Schweitzer. Together with "Tata" (Adele Herrenschmidt), a good acquaintance of Schweitzer's, he stayed on the Grimmialp for several weeks from 1901 to 1909—except for 1907 when he was in the Grisons region. Here he sought peace and relaxation and enjoyed many hikes in nature.

In his honor, a small circular hiking trail was established together with the Swiss Aid Association for the Albert Schweitzer Hospital. Rest benches and quotes from Albert Schweitzer help to reflect and recharge.

Digital staging from the rich life of the doctor, philosopher, theologian, and organist
Besides extended and virtual reality, you experience through animated graphics, audio and video contributions, as well as interactive game elements on the existing theme trail the rich facets of Albert Schweitzer's life in a somewhat different way (info for download under "More info and links").

From here, you hike towards Würzi and along the forest edge back towards Seehoreweid. Over the Buechli, you take the descent to the valley road before turning left after 250 meters to reach the Schwenden Chapel. The chapel, over 100 years old, is somewhat hidden and surrounded by trees. The path leads you back to the Hotel Kurhaus Grimmialp.
