Flavors of the Landscape - Stone, soil and Wine
Naturpark Pfyn-Finges - Can wines be distinguished by their region of origin? How does a wine grown on limestone, for example, compare in flavour to one grown on sandstone? What is special about the soil in Salgesch?
The village of Salgesch lies at the heart of a geosite of national importance: the prehistoric Salgesch/Sierre debris flow. Around 9,000 years ago, an entire layer of rock broke away above Salgesch and spread over a distance of 12 kilometres through the Rhône Valley. The hills stretching from Finges to Grône bear witness to the scale of this event, which permanently altered the geography of Central Valais. We set out to explore these traces visible in the landscape, accompanied by an enthusiastic geographer, as well as a winegrower, to recount the history of the soil and its grape varieties. The excursion concludes with a tasting at the winery, which is set to become a partner of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park.
The event is in two languages, German and French.
