10,000 years of history on the Illgraben landscape
Naturpark Pfyn-Finges - The Illgraben is a site with a history stretching back thousands of years. Intense geological processes have been shaping the area for more than 10,000 years, and man has also left his mark here, building roads since antiquity and sometimes fighting.
The Illgraben is a site with a history stretching back thousands of years. Intense geological processes have been shaping the area for over 10,000 years. And the human history is just as fascinating as the natural history of the Illgraben. The future A9 motorway follows the route of an ancient Roman road in the Pfyngut region. This region was also the scene of the Battle of Finges in 1799 and the ‘agricultural battle’ of the Wahlen Plan during the 2nd World War.
The Wahlen Plan was a programme to promote Swiss food cultivation that was presented around 1940. It was also known as the battle of the fields.
